Favorite Restaurants: The Best Pizza in Tamarindo

Bonnie and Clyde, gin and tonic, yin and yang – the world is full of perfect pairings. And here's one more: pizza at the beach. We know from experience – there are few simpler and more delicious pleasures than diving into a perfect pie after a day with your toes in the sand and your feet in the Pacific. And that's why we've rounded up a few more of our favorite restaurants, this time those offering the best pizza in Tamarindo.

El Sapo Ristopizza

Phone: 2249-5432 | Website Welcome to the best of both worlds: a delicious pizzeria AND cocktail bar. Here, you'll find everything from American-style pies to chef's specialties and even – wait for it – fried pizza! (It's similar to a calzone.) We love the sheer variety of options and high-quality ingredients available at El Sapo; you can go classic with the Reina Margherita (tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil and olive oil) or take it high-class with the Master Chef (mozzarella cheese, fresh mushrooms, and white truffle oil) or Oslo (mozzarella cheese, smoked salmon, double cream, ground black pepper) – plus dozens of other choices. And don't forget the cocktails!

Enea's La Vera Cucina Italiana

Phone: 2249-3060 or 8502-2110| Website When you're after ultra-fresh and completely homemade, Enea's fits the bill with all matter of Italian cuisine – including authentic pizzas! The house specialty is the Napoli (tomato sauce, fresh oregano, fresh basil and anchovies) but the menu offers plenty of other temptations, including Diavola (tomato sauce, mozzarella, spicy pepperoni and fresh basil) and Della Casa (white pizza with mozzarella, provolone, onions and Italian ham), as well as not-pizza-but-definitely-Italian favorites like "Caciucco" fish soup and homemade pasta with ragú alla Bolognese. Buon appetito!

La Esquina Restaurant & Pizzeria

Phone: 2653-1450| Website If you love pizza, then you'll love La Esquina, where the pizza is excellent, the crust perfect (thank you, brick oven!), and the service attentive. Of course, you're here for the pizza so let's jump right to it: from the standard focaccia (pizza bread with garlic oil, rosemary and parmesan) to their specialty pizzas – Explosiva (tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, hot chilis, sweet peppers, tabasco, jalapenos and onion) and "La Esquina" (mozzarella, ham, mushrooms, olives, heart of palm and sweet peppers, with your choice of tomato or pink sauce), among them – here, you could order a completely different pizza for every day of the week. Pasta, shrimp tacos, and other beach fusion dishes also grace the menu.

La Pachanga

Phone: 8347-7001| Website In addition to some of the best pizza in Tamarindo, La Pachanga is a bonafide Italian eatery, offering everything from homemade ravioli to fresh-caught fish. But, let's be honest: the real star of the show is the pizza, which delivers on all your standard favorites, like Hawaiian, Pepperoni, and Four Cheese, and pumps up the flavor with its own offerings, like Boscaiola (tomato sauce, mozzarella, Italian sausage and mushroom), Focaccia Carpaccio (prosciutto, arugula and parmesan), and Geovanni (tomato sauce, mozzarella, bacon, onion and garlic).

Pizzeria La Baula

Phone: 2653-1450| Website If you're looking for great pizza, and especially if you're looking for great pizza and have little ones in tow, then look no further than Pizzeria La Baula. The menu has two things: pizza and salad – that's it, and it's done perfectly. This favorite pizza joint isn't a local mainstay for nothing: its fresh ingredients are always delicious and its menu is varied enough to keep everyone happy. From the Gorgonzola (tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and gorgonzola) for adult palates to the kid-pleasing Hot Dog (tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and hot dog), La Baula knows what's up with pizza. Bonus points for the outdoor seating and playground! This wraps up our top 5 choices for the best pizza in Tamarindo, but you should know – they're joined by many others. Tamarindo's restaurant scene is one of the best in Costa Rica and our pizza competition is fierce. You can get a great pie, almost everywhere. So who knows? We may do another pizzeria round-up soon!
