Property of the Month: Casa Shambala

Casa Shambala Avellanas Costa Rica vacation rental infinity pool

At Casa Shambala, a distinguished Playa Avellanas vacation rental, expect the extraordinary.

Casa Shambala is the kind of place where you have to blink. A few times. Maybe, pinch yourself?

Nope, you’re definitely not dreaming.

This is real life at Casa Shambala: 180-degree ocean views, custom furnishings, polished concrete and soaring glass, an infinity pool, intricately carved wooden doors, howler monkeys in the trees – the kind of place you read about and figure it has to be a fantasy. A hyperbole of vacation imagination.

Only here, it’s real.

Welcome to Casa Shambala

The breeze in your hair, the howlers in the trees, and this view at your service…

Secluded. A work of art. Unlike anything you’ve ever experienced.

There are a lot of ways we could describe Casa Shambala. They’re all pretty superlative. This is just that kind of home.

Casa Shambala – located in Playa Avellanas, just 30 minutes to downtown Tamarindo and 15 minutes to warm sand – is set on a hilltop within a 21-hectare horse ranch. Hence, secluded. Hence, stunning views. Hence, everything. Because, this vacation home is everything.

Home to four air-conditioned bedrooms, four bathrooms, and ample privacy – each of the second-level bedrooms is accessed via private staircase, has an ensuite bathroom, and overlooks ocean views – Casa Shambala is almost as spectacular within as without.

Almost. Because, outside? Well, the ocean side of the home is ringed by a crystalline ocean-view infinity pool, where hilltop breezes whisper and butterflies dance. In the trees: tropical birds and, as promised, inquisitive howler monkeys.

A Special Kind of Place

Hey there, wanna be my neighbor?

Delightfully secluded and owning a breathtaking (not hyperbole) 180-degree ocean view, Casa Shambala is so unique, so unlike any other home you have ever been in, that it feels almost imaginary.

Here, nothing is ordinary. Here, everything is extraordinary. From the floor mosaics to the carved wooden doors, from the handcrafted and polished concrete surfaces to the custom wood furniture and sculpted ceilings, every detail matters.

And, blended throughout – simplicity and the unexpected, woven through all of Casa Shambala’s interior and exterior living spaces. Every sink, tub and wash basin is made by hand. The kitchen’s ceiling fans resemble the wings of birds. This is just a taste, but we’ll stop there. You deserve the experience of surprise and delight, as you round each bend and hug each curve of Casa Shambala.

And when you’re finished, step out onto the footpath that leads to a shady lookout point. Take a seat on the rustic wooden bench. Enjoy the ocean breeze and the green-and-blue panoramas of Guanacaste’s tropical dry forests – rising toward the sun, sweeping down to the ocean. Welcome to the best private sunset spot in Guanacaste, if not all of Costa Rica.

This is one of the homes you almost don’t want to review because you want to keep it for yourself! Everything was beyond perfect. We had the most magical time there and it was just great vibes all around. They are correct that it is a mythical place – it is a sacred place where time stands still. We did not want to leave. And we will most certainly be back.

It is an hour up rugged roads in the jungle – about a 45 minute drive from Tamarindo. There is a finished private road that goes to Tamarindo but it is for J.W. Marriott and other hotel guests.

You can walk to Playa Lagartillo, which is not crowded. Or you can go to Playa Avellana, a 5 minute drive which has Lola’s, famous for the Lolaritos (delicious!). They had locals selling fresh coconut water and snow cones on the beach. The water was the perfect temperature. It was beautiful. Lots of birds. On the weekends, the beach does get crowded with locals.

The house is definitely hand crafted, from the floors to the doors to the fans. Open windows make the house breezy as the A.C. is not as powerful as Western A.C. The wind was definitely nice on hot days (we went in January during high season). I could see Villa Shambala being perfect for a spiritual retreat. Not only the grounds, the house and the vibe, but they have a collection of instruments and books that could keep you enthralled for months. Books on shamanism, mysticism, architecture, photography, holistic eating, medicinal Costa Rican plants, magical waterfalls in Costa Rica. These books spoke to me and I felt like I really knew the owners because I am fascinated with the same subjects. (Books are mostly in English though a few are in Spanish). I honestly sat there and video taped and took photos of the book titles because I wanted to read all that they had. I will come back one day and stay for longer to have a more spiritual vacation (we were there with friends so not as much down time). We had a blast playing on the drums and dancing in the living room. We enjoyed the infinity pool daily overlooking the jungle and ocean. Watched birds fly by that we do not get to see in the U.S. And butterflies. We did not get to see any monkeys but we did hear them echo in the forest. I would just say don’t walk through the grounds barefoot as there are ant hills. They also had wild horses on the property as it used to be an equestrian center.

Another thing we loved, which you don’t get at a lot of AirBnBs and hotels is that they had everything in the kitchen you could ask for – from blenders to a rice cooker to every kitchen utensil. They had a water jug so you can have fresh filtered water even though the water in the house is filtered and safe to use. There were 4 bedrooms (the top loft bedroom consisting of 4 beds – perfect for kids or singles). The other 3 bedrooms have king beds and one bedroom also has a pull down sofa. There are 3 bathrooms in the house and 3 showers. There are also at least 2 outdoor showers. His daughters artwork is on the wall in the top loft bedroom, motivational and inspiring saying.

The lookout point up the hill is a perfect place to watch the sunset. They also have a small firepit and extra fire logs in case you want to use the grill (we bought food from the market and the meat was so fresh and tasted so yummy cooked with the firewood). We cooked better meals at home than we found locally at restaurants. It is also nice to go food shopping when in town because the local mini mart did not have much and ran out of essentials while we were there.

They have WiFi and a TV in one of the bedrooms and an up to date and pretty complete film collection – all of your favorites.

Maids come every day and can even cook breakfast if needed. They were stocked with shampoo, toilet paper, laundry detergent, hand soap, dish soap, dish detergent etc. Just stop to get conditioner if needed. There is a washer and dryer as well (maid will do pool towels and do dishes daily).

Parking is good for ~6 cars inside the gate. Definitely recommend getting 4 wheel drive truck to get up the roads.

    Can’t wait to go again!
